Machimoodus State Park – Moodus
With options from flat and level to steep and twisting, Machimoodus State Park has something for everyone. Access to the large parking area is directly off of CT Route 151. There are a number of non-motorized multi-use trails that intersect to provide various length loop hikes, so bring the map with you. From the parking lot the trails head out on level terrain past a pond that provides some good bird watching. Highly recommended is the Upper Vista Trail, which after a mild climb, will bring you to a bluff overlooking Salmon River Cove. Keep your eyes peeled for eagles, osprey and heron! Be aware that the trail from the Upper Vista Trail to the Lower Vista Trail [section labled “(0.17)” on the map is very steep with loose footing. Additional views of Salmon River Cove and of Salmon River itself are available along the Lower Vista trail and it’s spurs. The Upper and Lower Vista Trails combined are 1-3/4 miles in length (excluding spur trails). Those wishing to extend their hike and get down to the Salmon River can continue into the adjacent Sunrise Resort State Park.
Facilities at the park include picnic tables and pit toilets. There is no fee for parking at Machimoodus State Park.
Directions: From the intersection of Routes 82 and 149 in East Haddam follow Route 149 north 3.8 miles to its intersection with Route 151. Turn left (west) on Route 151 and follow for 1.2 miles to the park entrance on the left.
