Matilda Browne: Idylls of Farm and Garden
The approximately 50 works in the exhibition reveal Browne’s artistic flexibility,
from highly accomplished academic depictions to atmospheric Barbizon-influenced
canvases and bright impressionistic scenes. The exhibition is the first solo exhibition
dedicated to Browne in more than eight decades and the first ever in a museum. Guest
curator Susan G. Larkin, Ph.D., an independent art historian, developed Idylls of
Farm and Garden in partnership with Curator Amy Kurtz Lansing to raise awareness
of this female artist who, in her lifetime, was recognized as an accomplished professional
when few women were acknowledged as such. An exhibition catalogue will be available
in The Shop.
