Plywood Cowboy @ Leif Nilsson Spring Street Studio and Gallery
Jun 22 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Formed in 2015 in the Connecticut River Valley, Plywood Cowboy is poised to rewrite the American Songbook. “With great harmonies, clever songs & tasty guitar pickin’, Plywood Cowboy is one of the best new bands on the Americana scene.” – Chris Bergson, NY Blues Hall of Fame Inductee. Bottle fed on roots music, multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter Steve Dedman and his band strike deep at the soul of American music with songs about hound dogs, heart strings, and the vice of the bottle.

Plywood Cowboy is reaching new audiences through their expanding live performance schedule, and is currently writing and recording new material that is on track for a debut album release in 2016. Their music reflects decades of playing and performing experience by Steve and his band mates. Combining Austin Gray’s ever-present harmonies and palpable telecaster work, Shane Tanner’s warm Fender bass lines and Henry Yorzinski’s exacting drumwork, Plywood Cowboy’s music sits comfortably on the ears of its listeners.

The band has appeared numerous times on iCRV Radio and has been a featured band on WESU 88.1FM ‘Voice of the City’. They’ve also found the spotlight on stages throughout Connecticut including Infinity Hall and The Kate, and destination venues from Monadnock Pumpkin Festival (NH) to Puckett’s (TN). In addition to the core lineup, guest musicians are often featured at live performances, including Emily Marcello on violin, and others on pedal steel, tenor saxophone, and banjo.

Kick up your heels to the sounds of Bivolita Klezmer Quartet while enjoying some really good grilled food prepared by our “Holy Grillers”. Bring your own entrée (please no pork or shellfish), your favorite lawn chair or blanket. This free concert is open to the public so bring your friends. Jointly produced by our Music & More and Social Action committee, it is intended not only as a joyous music treat, but something that will benefit those in need. Although there is no charge for the performance, concertgoers will have the opportunity to purchase delicious grilled food and desserts – and all proceeds will benefit local charitable organizations.
In the event of rain, we’ll move the music inside. So, come, enjoy, dance and perform a mitzvah (a good deed) at the same time. No reservations are necessary.
A few words about Bivolita (Bee-vo-lee-tsa) Klezmer. This young group’s repertoire is drawn from the early, European sources of Jewish instrumental wedding music but finds contemporary interpretations to reveal the diverse musical experiences of its members. Assembled through years of travel and research, the program includes suites that link nearly forgotten ritual melodies with more commonly known American klezmer repertoire and co-territorial Moldavian dance music. The group uses tradition as a springboard to new spontaneous interpretations and a deep appreciation of the core dance rhythms as the foundation for elaboration and improvisation. As this infectious music ensues you might find yourself dancing.

Fully embracing the inspiring, expansive array of American jazz, soul and blues influences that have infused her dynamic career as an artist and live performer, Polly Gibbons fashions a frolicsome, freewheeling musical history lesson on Is It Me…?, her second release on the indie jazz label Resonance Records.
Capturing the joyful essence of the 12-track collection, the multi-talented British singer, a staple of the UK Jazz Scene since the mid-2000s and recently nominated Vocalist of the Year by Jazz FM says: “It’s a massive melting pot, varied but beautifully linked because I love every style I’m singing. Jazz would never have happened without the blues, which came out of the gospel tradition – and blues is the foundation of contemporary Western culture and pop/soul music, and so on.”

With her voice “clear and smooth like expensive liquor,” she stands “above and beyond the pack” (Northeast Performer). Former Connecticut State Troubadour, Lara brings a charm, authenticity, and love of performing that immediately resonates with diverse audiences. She has appeared as a guest on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor and tours from Maine to Miami. She also has extensive experience as a policy social worker, and has worked in the US, Latin America and Asia on behalf of disadvantaged individuals – focusing on education, community development, and juvenile justice. Echoes of these themes resonate throughout her music.
KATE CALLAHAN
Connecticut’s 16th State Troubadour, Kate Callahan gives a concert of compelling original music plus songs by Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan. Callahan has shared stages with songwriter legends Judy Collins, Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul & Mary), and Aztec Two Step. She is unapologetically optimistic in concert, singing original songs about the Earth, gratitude, marriage, love, and spirit. Kate is one of the most awarded songwriters in her home state of Connecticut, holding the prestigious United Arts Campaign’s Featured Artist of the year in 2014. She has been named Connecticut’s Best Singer-Songwriter, and received Hartford’s Woman of Character Award. The Boston Globe says “Kate has garnered an appreciative audience with her easy going vibe and mystical lyrics.” She lives in Connecticut where she also leads a vocal improvisation workshop she created, called the Miracle of Melody.
CAROLINE DOCTOROW

Jul 7 @ 8:30 pm – 11:00 pm

Jamie Baum – flutes
Gregoire Maret – harmonica
Gilad Hekselman – guitar
Andy Milne – piano
Joe Martin – bass
Jeff Hirshfield – drums

Jamie Baum, known for her award-winning Septet+ that features her global-influenced,
increasingly complex and long-form compositions, formed Short Stories to compliment
and expand her palette. With an emphasis on improvisation, her inspiration came from
the short but eloquent, harmonic and motivically-packed compositions by such jazz
icons as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. Combined with the
excitement and drive of the modern “jazz standard”, Baum strives in this setting to
compose or arrange “short stories” that set the tone for this unique instrumentation and
top-flight group of musicians.

Short Stories made its debut performance in January, 2015 at Greenwich House, NYC,
as part of Jazz Resolutions 2015 during the APAP/Winter JazzFest weekend, and was
filmed by Mezzo/Kidem, a French TV film crew for broadcast the following September.
Since then, performances have included NYC’s Jazz Gallery, Cornelia Street Cafe, St.
Peter’s “Jazz on The Plaza” and tours in the US and Canada at venues including as
Kerrytown Concert House, Soundwaves and JazzLive.

Ian and Dustin Meadows have been playing music together for most of their lives. In 2011, they made the decision to leave the band they were playing in, and strike out on their own as a duo. Their distinct brand of roots music draws inspiration from a huge list of influences; combining Folk, Blues, Country, and Rock n’ roll genres into what The Boston Globe calls “An engagingly twangy sibling sound all their own.”
The brothers’ original songs; which they typically write together, have been praised for their emotive, relatable lyrics and memorable hooks. Several of their tunes have won awards, and been covered by international acts.
